Q2-4. When doing amortized analysis, which one of the following statements is FALSE?

A. Aggregate analysis shows that for all \(n\), a sequence of \(n\) operations takes worst-case time \(T(n)\) in total. Then the amortized cost per operation is therefore \(T(n)/n\)

B. For potential method, a good potential function should always assume its maximum at the start of the sequence

C. For accounting method, when an operation's amortized cost exceeds its actual cost, we save the difference as credit to pay for later operations whose amortized cost is less than their actual cost

Q2-5. Consider the following buffer management problem. Initially the buffer size (the number of blocks) is one. Each block can accommodate exactly one item. As soon as a new item arrives, check if there is an available block. If yes, put the item into the block, induced a cost of one. Otherwise, the buffer size is doubled, and then the item is able to put into. Moreover, the old items have to be moved into the new buffer so it costs \(k+1\) to make this insertion, where \(k\) is the number of old items. Clearly, if there are \(N\) items, the worst-case cost for one insertion can be \(\Omega(N)\). To show that the average cost is \(O(1)\), let us turn to the amortized analysis. To simplify the problem, assume that the buffer is full after all the \(N\) items are placed. Which of the following potential functions works?

A. The number of items currently in the buffer

B. The opposite number of items currently in the buffer

C. The number of available blocks currently in the buffer

Q2-1. Rod-cutting Problem: Given a rod of total length \(N\) inches and a table of selling prices \(P_L\) for lengths \(L=1,2,⋯,M\). You are asked to find the maximum revenue \(R_N\) obtainable by cutting up the rod and selling the pieces. For example, based on the following table of prices, if we are to sell an 8-inch rod, the optimal solution is to cut it into two pieces of lengths 2 and 6, which produces revenue \(R_8=P_2+P_6=5+17=22\).

Q1-1. Suppose ALG is an \(\alpha\)-approximation algorithm for an optimization problem \(\prod\) whose approximation ratio is tight. Then for every \(\varepsilon>0\) there is no \((\alpha−\varepsilon)\)-approximation algorithm for \(\prod\) unless P = NP. (T/F)

Answer

F。

Q1-2. As we know there is a 2-approximation algorithm for the Vertex Cover problem. Then we must be able to obtain a 2-approximation algorithm for the Clique problem, since the Clique problem can be polynomially reduced to the Vertex Cover problem. (T/F)

Answer

F。

\[ |\text{max clique of }G|=K\iff |\text{max vertex cover of }\overline{G}|=|V|-K \]

\[ \rho_2=\frac{C_2}{C_2^*}=\frac{T}{T^*}=2,\quad \rho_1=\frac{C_1^*}{C_1}=\frac{|V|-T^*}{|V|-T}=1+\frac{1}{\dfrac{|V|}{T^*}-2} \]

Q2-1. For the bin-packing problem: let \(S=\sum_iS_i\). Which of the following statements is FALSE?

A. The number of bins used by the next-fit heuristic is never more than \(\lceil 2S\rceil\)

B. The number of bins used by the first-fit heuristic is never more than \(\lceil 2S\rceil\)

C. The next-fit heuristic leaves at most one bin less than half full

D. The first-fit heuristic leaves at most one bin less than half full

Answer

C。

\[ S = \sum_{i=1}^{2M\text{ or }2M+1}S(B_i) \geqslant \sum_{i=1}^M[S(B_{2i-1})+S(B_{2i})] > \sum_{i=1}^M1=M \]

因此有 \(2S>2M \Rightarrow \lceil 2S\rceil \geqslant 2M+1\),因此 A 正确。

first-fit(1.7-approximation) 优于 next-fit(2-approximation),因此 B 也正确。

Also let \(w(E')=\sum _{(u,v)\in E}w(u,v)\) for any edge set \(E'\). Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. \(S=T\) for any graph \(G\)

B. \(S\neq T\) for any graph \(G\)

C. \(w(T)\geqslant w(S)/2\) for any graph \(G\)

Q1-2. We are given a set of sites \(S=\{s_{1}, s_{2}, \cdots, s_{n}\}\) in the plane, and we want to choose a set of \(k\) centers \(C=\{c_{1}, c_{2}, \cdots, c_{k}\}\) so that the maximum distance from a site to the nearest center is minimized. Here \(c_{i}\) can be an arbitrary point in the plane.

A local search algorithm arbitrarily choose \(k\) points in the plane to be the centers, then

  • (1) divide \(S\) into \(k\) sets, where \(S_{i}\) is the set of all sites for which \(c_{i}\) is the nearest center; and

  • (2) for each \(S_{i}\), compute the central position as a new center for all the sites in \(S_{i}\).

If steps (1) and (2) cause the covering radius to strictly decrease, we perform another iteration, otherwise the algorithm stops.

When the above local search algorithm terminates, the covering radius of its solution is at most 2 times the optimal covering radius. (T/F)

Answer

F。

\[ \begin{gathered} A(-1, \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}),\quad B(1, \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}),\quad C(-1, -\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}),\quad D(1, -\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}) \\ E(-3, 2\sqrt{3}),\quad F(3, 2\sqrt{3}),\quad G(0, 2\sqrt{3}+\sqrt{7}),\quad H(0,0.000001),\quad I(0,-0.000001) \end{gathered} \]

\[ c_1(-1, 0),\quad c_2(0, 0),\quad c_3(1, 0),\quad c_4(0, 2\sqrt{3}+\sqrt{7}),\quad \]

\[ c_1'(-2, \frac{5\sqrt{3}}{4}),\quad c_2'(0, 0),\quad c_3'(2, \frac{5\sqrt{3}}{4}),\quad c_4'(0, 2\sqrt{3}+\sqrt{7}+4),\quad \]

Q2-1. Spanning Tree Problem: Given an undirected graph \(G=(V, E)\), where \(|V|=n\) and \(|E|=m\). Let \(F\) be the set of all spanning trees of \(G\). Define \(d(u)\) to be the degree of a vertex \(u \in V\). Define \(w(e)\) to be the weight of an edge \(e \in E\).

We have the following three variants of spanning tree problems:

  • (1) Max Leaf Spanning Tree: find a spanning tree \(T \in F\) with a maximum number of leaves.

  • (2) Minimum Spanning Tree: find a spanning tree \(T \in F\) with a minimum total weight of all the edges in \(T\).

  • (3) Minimum Degree Spanning Tree: find a spanning tree \(T \in F\) such that its maximum degree of all the vertices is the smallest.

For a pair of edges \(\left(e, e^{\prime}\right)\) where \(e \in T\) and \(e^{\prime} \in(G-T)\) such that \(e\) belongs to the unique cycle of \(T \cup e^{\prime}\), we define edge-swap \(\left(e, e^{\prime}\right)\) to be \((T-e) \cup e^{\prime}\).

Here is a local search algorithm:

T = any spanning tree in F_i
while (there is an edge-swap (e, e') which reduces Cost(T)) {
    T = T - e + e';
}
return T;

Here \(\operatorname{cost}(T)\) is the number of leaves in \(T\) in Max Leaf Spanning Tree; or is the total weight of \(T\) in Minimum Spanning Tree; or else is the minimum degree of \(T\) in Minimum Degree Spanning Tree.

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The local search always return an optimal solution for Max Leaf Spanning Tree

B. The local search always return an optimal solution for Minimum Spanning Tree

C. The local search always return an optimal solution for Minimum Degree Spanning Tree

D. For neither of the problems that this local search always return an optimal solution

Answer

B。

Q2-2. There are \(n\) jobs, and each job \(j\) has a processing time \(t_{j}\). We will use a local search algorithm to partition the jobs into two groups A and B, where set A is assigned to machine \(M_{1}\) and set \(\mathrm{B}\) to \(M_{2}\). The time needed to process all of the jobs on the two machines is \(T_{1}=\sum_{j \in A} t_{j}, T_{2}=\sum_{j \in B} t_{j}\). The problem is to minimize \(\left|T_{1}-T_{2}\right|\).

Local search: Start by assigning jobs \(1, \ldots, n / 2\) to \(M_{1}\), and the rest to \(M_{2}\).

The local moves are to move a single job from one machine to the other, and we only move a job if the move decreases the absolute difference in the processing times. Which of the following statement is true?

A. The problem is NP-hard and the local search algorithm will not terminate.

B. When there are many candidate jobs that can be moved to reduce the absolute difference, if we always move the job \(j\) with maximum \(t_j\) , then the local search terminates in at most \(n\) moves.

C. The local search algorithm always returns an optimal solution.

D. The local search algorithm always returns a local solution with \(\frac{1}{2}T_1\leqslant T\leqslant 2T_1\).

Answer

B。

Q2-3. Max-cut problem: Given an undirected graph \(G=(V, E)\) with positive integer edge weights \(w_{e}\), find a node partition \((A, B)\) such that \(w(A, B)\), the total weight of edges crossing the cut, is maximized. Let us define \(S^{\prime}\) be the neighbor of \(S\) such that \(S^{\prime}\) can be obtained from \(S\) by moving one node from \(A\) to \(B\), or one from \(B\) to \(A\). only choose a node which, when flipped, increases the cut value by at least \(w(A, B) /|V|\). Then which of the following is true?

A. Upon the termination of the algorithm, the algorithm returns a cut \((A,B)\) so that \(2.5w(A,B)\geqslant w(A^∗, b^*)\), where \((A^∗ ,B^∗)\) is an optimal partition.

B. The algorithm terminates after at most \(O(\log|V|\log W)\) flips, where \(W\) is the total weight of edges.

C. Upon the termination of the algorithm, the algorithm returns a cut \((A,B)\) so that \(2w(A,B)\geqslant w(A^∗, b^*)\).

D. The algorithm terminates after at most \(O(|V|^2)\) flips.

Q1-1. Let \(a=\left(a_{1}, a_{2}, \ldots, a_{i}, \ldots, a_{j}, \ldots, a_{n}\right)\) denote the list of elements we want to sort. In the quicksort algorithm, if the pivot is selected uniformly at random. Then any two elements get compared at most once and the probability of \(a_{i}\) and \(a_{j}\) being compared is \(2 /(j-i+1)\) for \(j>i\), given that \(a_{i}\) or \(a_{j}\) is selected as the pivot. (T/F)

Answer

F。

Q2-1. Given a linked list containg \(N\) nodes. Our task is to remove all the nodes. At each step, we randomly choose one node in the current list, then delete the selected node together with all the nodes after it. Here we assume that each time we choose one node uniformly among all the remaining nodes. What is the expected number of steps to remove all the nodes?

A.\(\Theta (\log N)\)

B.\(N/e\)

C.\(N/2\)

D.\(\sqrt{N}\)

Answer

A。

\[ a_n = \frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=1}^{N-1}a_i+1 \]

\[ a_n = \frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=1}^{N-1}a_i+1 \leqslant \frac{C}{N}\log\left(2N\prod_{i=1}^{N-1}i\right) \leqslant C\log N \]

Q2-2. Use The Online Hiring Algorithm ( hire only once ). Assume that the quality input \(C[ ]\) is uniformly random.

When \(N = 271\) and \(k = 90\), the probability of hiring the Nth candidate is __.

Answer

\[ \frac{1}{N}\cdot \frac{k}{N-1} + \frac{k}{N} = \frac{1}{3} \]

Q1-1. While comparing a serial algorithm with its parallel counterpart, we just concentrate on reducing the work load. (T/F)

Answer

F。

除了 work load \(W(n)\) 之外,减少 worst-case running time\(T(n)\) 也是所关注的。

Q1-2. To evaluate the Prefix-Sums of a sequence of 16 numbers by the parallel algorithm with Balanced Binary Trees, C(4,1) is found before C(2,2). (T/F)

Answer

T。

因此 C(4, 1) 显然应该在 C(2, 2) 之前计算。

Q1-3. To evaluate the sum of a sequence of 16 numbers by the parallel algorithm with Balanced Binary Trees, B(1,6) is found before B(2,1). (T/F)

Answer

Q1-4. In order to solve the maximum finding problem by a parallel algorithm with \(T(n)=O(1)\) , we need work load \(W(n)=\Omega(n^2)\) in return. (T/F)

Answer

F。

Q1-5. To solve the Maximum Finding problem with parallel Random Sampling method, O(n) processors are required to get T(n)=O(1) and W(n)=O(n) with very high probability. (T/F)

Q1-1. To merge 55 runs using 3 tapes for a 2-way merge, the original distribution (34, 21) is better than (27, 28). (T/F)

Answer

Q1-2. If only one tape drive is available to perform the external sorting, then the tape access time for any algorithm will be \(\Omega(N^2)\) (T/F)

Answer

T。考虑寻道时间从 \(\Omega(1)\) 上升到 \(\Omega(n)\)

Q1-3. In external sorting, a \(k\)-way merging is usually used in order to reduce the number of passes and we will take the \(k\) as large as possible as long as we have enough amount of tapes. (T/F)

Answer

F。

Q1-4. In general, for a 3-way merge we need 6 input buffers and 2 output buffers for parallel operations. (T/F)

Answer

T。

In general, for a \(k\)-way merge we need \(2k\) input buffers and 2 output buffers for parallel operations in external sorting.

Q2-1. Given 100,000,000 records of 256 bytes each, and the size of the internal memory is 128MB. If simple 2-way merges are used, how many passes do we have to do?

A. 10

B. 9

C. 8

D. 7

Answer

B。

block size \(=128\times 2^{20}/256=2^{19}\)

则 number of passes \(= 1+\lceil \log_2(10^8/2^{19}) \rceil=9\)

Q2-2. In external sorting, suppose we have 5 runs of lengths 2, 8, 9, 5, and 3, respectively. Which of the following merging orders can obtain the minimum merge time?

A. merge runs of lengths 2 and 3 to obtain Run#1; merge Run#1 with the one of length 5 to obtain Run#2; merge Run#2 with the one of length 8 to obtain Run#3; merge Run#3 with the one of length 9

B. merge runs of lengths 2 and 3 to obtain Run#1; merge Run#1 with the one of length 5 to obtain Run#2; merge runs of lengths 8 and 9 to obtain Run#3; merge Run#2 and Run#3

C. merge runs of lengths 2 and 3 to obtain Run#1; merge runs of lengths 5 and 8 to obtain Run#2; merge Run#1 and Run#2 to obtain Run#3; merge Run#3 with the one of length 9

D. merge runs of lengths 2 and 3 to obtain Run#1; merge runs of lengths 5 and 8 to obtain Run#2; merge Run#2 with the one of length 9 to obtain Run#3; merge Run#1 and Run#3

Answer

Q2-3. In external sorting, in order to reduce the number of passes, minimizing the initial number of runs (i.e. generating longer runs ) is a good idea. Suppose the input record keys are (25, 74, 56, 34, 21, 11, 29, 80, 38, 53) and the internal memery can hold only 3 records, the minimum number of initial runs obtained by replacement selection is__ 。

A. 1

B. 2

C. 3

D. 4

Answer

\[ \begin{matrix} 25 & 34 & 56 & 74\\ 11 & 21 & 29 & 38 & 53 & 80 \end{matrix} \]

Q2-4. Suppose we have the internal memory that can handle 12 numbers at a time, and the following two runs on the tapes:

Run 1: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12

Run 2: 2, 4, 6, 15, 20, 25, 30, 32

Use 2-way merge with 4 input buffers and 2 output buffers for parallel operations. Which of the following three operations are NOT done in parallel?

A. 1 and 2 are written onto the third tape; 3 and 4 are merged into an output buffer; 6 and 15 are read into an input buffer

B. 3 and 4 are written onto the third tape; 5 and 6 are merged into an output buffer; 8 and 9 are read into an input buffer

C. 5 and 6 are written onto the third tape; 7 and 8 are merged into an output buffer; 20 and 25 are read into an input buffer

D. 7 and 8 are written onto the third tape; 9 and 15 are merged into an output buffer; 10 and 12 are read into an input buffer

Answer

Q2-5. Suppose that the replacement selection is applied to generate longer runs with a priority queue of size 4. Given the sequence of numbers { 9, 75, 17, 12, 88, 91, 25, 22, 35, 41, 58, 96, 15 }. Which of the following gives the second output run?

A. 22 35 88 91

B. 22 35 41 58 88 91 96

C. 22 35 41 58 96

D. 22 35 41 58

Answer

9 12 17 25 75 88 91
22 35 41 58 96
15
